Zalando is a European e-commerce retailer that sells name brands in addition to its own private-label clothing. For more details on the company’s social and environmental commitments, see the Remake Brand Directory.
#PAYUP
There is no evidence that Zalando cancelled orders or asked its manufacturing partners for delays in payment or discounts during the pandemic.
KEEP WORKERS SAFE
The Keep Workers Safe demand requires brands to ensure their garment workers’ financial and economic safety during the pandemic by signing onto theSeverance Guarantee Fund, which creates a social safety net for laid-off workers; by contributing to direct relief for garment workers; and by protecting human rights, democracy, and the right to organize. It’s estimated the cost to ensure a social safety net for garment workers is just $.10 cents more per garment. And yet Zalando made no additional efforts to Keep Workers Safe during the pandemic, earning the brand a “NO” for Keep Workers Safe.
GO TRANSPARENT
Zalando is transparent about its own private-label Tier 1 cut-and-sew facilities, which is a step in the right direction. But to receive a “YES” for Action 3 on the PayUp Fashion Tracker, Zalando must disclose its tier 2 (fabric mills), tier 3 (yarn and fiber mills) and tier 4 (raw materials) suppliers as well as disclose the wages of the lowest-earning workers at each factory and share audit and remediation reports publicly, and make these findings available to the garment workers in the audited factories.
END STARVATION WAGES
Zalando has made a public commitment to pay its garment makers a living wage, but has made no demonstrable progress towards its goal.
SIGN ENFORCEABLE CONTRACTS
The Accord – Zalando has signed onto the new enforceable Accord agreement on apparel factory safety, which ensures individual accountability for brands and expansion into new countries. They are on the positive side of our Accord Tracker. For their commitment to the Accord, they get a yellow slash under Sign Enforceable Contracts to indicate they’ve met some conditions of this demand.
